Daily Doctor Mom Secret #5

Secret #5: Remember your spouse.

I don’t know what state your marriage is in, but I do know that it probably needs improvement.  When your child has a medical need, the stress on your marriage can be overwhelming.

The divorce rate for parents of children with diseases is through the roof. I saw one estimate that it is over 80%!

Unbelievable!  And yet, believable, right?

Guess what?  You’re in this together. In God’s eyes you are a team and you need to act like one.

Warning: It won’t always be easy.

Warning: It may never be easy.

But you need to figure this out and make sure your marriage is working.  Your child has enough challenges without adding divorce to the list.  Plus, your kids will be grown in no time.  You don’t want to turn around one day and realize your husband is a stranger.  I love my husband too much to let that happen.  You can’t let it happen either.

If your marriage is suffering, get help. Read a book on marriage, talk to a pastor, or have your doctor recommend someone.

Make time with your husband a priority.  Even if you don’t feel like it.  Childcare may be an issue, but you can figure out something.  I know one Doctor Mom who hires a nurse to babysit!

If money is tight (and it probably is!) simply pop in a movie for your kids, while you and your husband enjoy a quiet dinner together.

Just do something.  Anything!  Your marriage is worth it!

And never forget to make prayer a priority.  God can change things in the blink of an eye.  If your situation seems unbearable–that’s when He works best!

A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands. Proverbs 14:1

  1. We always make sure to schedule “date nights”. It might only happen every couple of months, but it’s so nice to go to a nice dinner together and EAT WHEAT!!!!!LOL
